The darker side of the human imagination is sometimes a source of great inspiration for some — even for artists working with recycled materials. Using found objects like old cash registers, sewer hole covers and helicopter parts, along with hammer-formed steel, San Diego-based artist Greg Brotherton creates unsettling but finely crafted sculptures that reflect a dystopian worldview. Colossal calls him a cross between Tim Burton and Edouard Martinet; we are inclined to agree.

For the last 11 years, people from around the world have gathered in Portland, Oregon for a ten-day event called the Village Building Convergence. They come together to learn about natural building, creative art projects, sustainable living, and how to strengthen the bonds within a community. In essence, they learn how to create a modern-day village and take these lessons back to their community. Village Alchemy takes a narrative-style documentary look at this event, and offers a list of ingredients for other communities to be inspired and empowered to create their own such gatherings.

Review: 33 Revolutions Per Minute »

At 843 pages, Dorian Lynskey’s massive history of the popular protest song cannot be taken lightly, anywhere. ‘I began this book intending to write a history of a still vital form of music. I finished it wondering if I had instead composed a eulogy,’ Lynskey concludes. His explanation for the decline weaves together the rise of the bland pop star with the shift to Facebook activism: in his view both lack risk and struggle. But to stay true to his thesis that protest songs are created when the context demands them, Lynskey could have qualified this conclusion – after all, the times can change very quickly, and protest songs don’t take long to write.
